Citizens have gathered across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in Gaza.

The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured away to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel responded by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.

"The violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.

He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The government authorities postponed formal remembrance events until 16 October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place around the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the relatives of people killed in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was observed around the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the provisions of the proposal.

A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the talks said that an evening round of indirect talks started at evening in Egypt.

The representative stated the earlier meeting concluded without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet achieve any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are striving to close the disparities between the two sides.

Key Issues in Negotiations

  • An enduring truce
  • The exchange of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance deliveries
  • Future administration of the area

Civilian Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose brother lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place seems like home any longer and until every captive come back not a single person will be secure."

"Once we see everybody home returned, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she continued.

Outside the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester one woman remarked: "We must do any agreement required for the captives to come back home. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately the majority of the population prefer the hostilities to end in exchange for the freedom of the captives.

Gaza Conditions

At the area of the gathering, those paying respects came together to honor the dead.

From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be heard just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli bombardment continued.

In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of the community, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"When the evening arrives, the dread arrives with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, shared.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who places his face on me all night."

"Constantly we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."

Health Situation

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had accepted the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the south region of that area indicated additional fatalities had been delivered. A person was died by Israeli forces while seeking help to the southern area, medical staff said.

The territory's health ministry said 25 of the {territ
