That Gruesome Animated Film Ending That Lingers Viewers
Among all the mature animated films I have ever viewed, no other has remained with me as much as the dread-soaked conclusion of the viscerally violent and highly provocative 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spain-based writer-director developed a grim, bleak , often savage universe with several minor , desolate hints of hope.
Although The Unicorn Wars seems like it came from a desire to push animation further, the filmmaker clarified that it was actually an effort to convey a widespread, cross-cultural message concerning “the shared root of each battle.”
This theme is communicated by means of a squad of vividly colored bears , obviously inspired by a well-known series of lovable characters.
Being raised in a society centered on militarism as well as the defense industry, many of these animals are consumed by killing the mythical beasts, thanks to a sacred text which states them they were once kings of the forest, before these creatures drove them out.
Others did not entirely fallen for the propaganda, and prefer to sample narcotics or fornicate outdoors.
Unlike their cuddly equivalents, these colorful critters show genitals and definite libidos.
For a particular notably brutal, cynical bear, the bear named Bluey, the conflict with the unicorns transforms into a path to power — and particularly to dominance above his softer, kinder brother the bear Tubby.
Bluey is a bully and a seeming psychopath , and as fear dominates his group and claims his comrades one by one, he grabs increasingly power for himself, through ever more bloody, destructive ways.
Meanwhile, these mythical beings are suffering their own nightmare, in the form of a spreading, destructive monster in their habitat.
“Initially, it feels like a lighthearted film,” the filmmaker stated. “Yet it becomes a more intense and sad film. And in the finale, it transforms into a horror film.”
Unicorn Wars begins similar to one of the most playful films from an iconic animator, that uncover a mischievous joy in permitting cartoon characters curse, fire weapons, or engage sexually.
Afterward it becomes closer to a more grim movie from that director, featuring progressively graphic violence and a palpable connection to the actual suffering of battle.
Ultimately, it’s a complete extreme drama carnage.
The terror which makes this an ideal spooky-season watch starts much sooner than that description suggests.
Unicorn Wars is ideal for the devoted gorehounds, for fans of intense movies who wish to view a film they have not seen on-screen before, and who can handle a plot which delivers unflinching brutality.
Watch it in a dimly lit space with no disturbances, and that ending will dig deep within you and stay with you.
