The East African nation Takes Back Cultural Treasures Following a Century Holding in Germany
Exactly Twelve ancient items have been formally given back to Ethiopia following being kept by a German family for over ten decades.
The artefacts, originally acquired in the early twentieth century by Germany's diplomat to Ethiopia a German envoy and his spouse Hedwig, were transferred on Wednesday to the Ethiopian Studies Institute at Addis Ababa University.
This set contained royal crowns, shields and artistic works, each viewed as historically significant in the nation.
"The items continue to stand as a emblem of the long-standing and positive ties between the German nation and Ethiopia," remarked the German diplomat, the representative to the East African country.
Professor Ramon Wyss, whose parent was delivered during the family's service in Ethiopia, presented the items at a ceremony joined by Tourism Minister the tourism official.
He stated that the family's intention to restore the treasures was to "showcase their appeal with the audience and maintain the heritage and history connected to my father's birth."
The artefacts were either presents or purchases, based on the family.
"I would like to thank the Weiss family for practically showing their sincere affection for the nation by meticulously maintaining these treasures and importantly guaranteeing their homecoming to their proper nation," said the minister of tourism.
She continued that the pieces would soon be available to the general audience for investigation and academic study, describing the move a significant step in preserving the nation's national treasures.
"Initiatives are ongoing to repatriate historical artifacts that are located in the custody of individuals and entities all over the planet," she said.
In the era of colonial rule in Africa, thousands of historical items were looted.
The call by nations in Africa for the repatriation of taken items has been answered with certain success in lately - though some items are just on loan.
Back in the year 2022, the German government was the first country to return some of the well-known Benin Bronzes to the Nigerian people in an attempt to confront its "complex colonial history."
