The Mayor-Elect states he will make his home in the iconic Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point in his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the official residence for most New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, did not confirm this decision right away following his victory in November.
"The choice came down to keeping my family safe and the need to dedicating all of my focus on enacting the affordability agenda New Yorkers voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.
Thanking a Neighborhood
He resided in Astoria, Queens, a community known for its diverse cultural enclaves and international dining.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Although my address will change in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his rivals, mainly one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he came from a well-known family.
A House Not Always Used
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg argued it should be a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his humble Astoria home.
With its pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.
The compound, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Haunted History
A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
Affordable Housing Lifeline
Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.
City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the price of rent rises faster than the means of many residents.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
